Rhiannon Thomas's dazzling debut novel is a spellbinding reimagining of Sleeping Beauty and what happens after happily ever after.

One hundred years after falling asleep, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince and a broken kingdom that has been dreaming of her return. All the books say that she should be living happily ever after. But as Aurora understands all too well, the truth is nothing like the fairy tale.

Her family is long dead. Her "true love" is a kind stranger. And her whole life has been planned out by political foes while she slept.

As Aurora struggles to make sense of her new world, she begins to fear that the curse has left its mark on her, a fiery and dangerous thing that might be as wicked as the witch who once ensnared her. With her wedding day drawing near, Aurora must make the ultimate decision on how to save her kingdom: marry the prince or run.

Rhiannon Thomas weaves together vivid scenes of action, romance, and gorgeous gowns to reveal a richly imagined world … and Sleeping Beauty as she’s never been seen before.

A Wicked Thing is the retelling of Sleeping Beauty or at least is based on it, but the plot takes place in the "happily ever after" and the story begins with the kiss that awakens Princess Aurora, who has been asleep for 100 years and upon waking she learns that all those she knew are gone and now she is expected to have her happy ending, with a prince she does not know, nor is attracted to. It is also expected that now that she awakened, better times will come for her impoverished kingdom.

What I liked the story is how Princess Aurora reacts once she´s kissed by her "true love", which is a complete stranger, her reaction was very real and also when she finds out that several princes have kissed her for the past 100 years .... it gives me the creeps.

But beyond that the plot is very predictable, with a very slow pace and there are times when almost nothing happens and it felt very dull romance. Prince Rodric of Alyssinia, is whom awakens Aurora with a kiss, he is nice guy but does everything that his parents tell him to do, so he knows he must marry her, for the good of the kingdom. Prince Finnigan of Vanhelm is interested in Aurora, but only because is convenience for him. And finally we have a boy Tristan working in a tavern/inn that becomes friend of Aurora. Of all of I liked Prince Finnegan because he´s the most honest.

A Wicked Thing is very slow paced and almost everything interesting happens in the later chapters, but overall it´s an okay book, but I felt that something was missing.

Jessica is going to Hell.

After settling a fragile truce between the vampires, werewolves and witches, the last thing Jessica wants to do is face the demons head on. But when the Prince of Hell kidnapped her brother, he set into motion a chain of events that even Jessica doesn't have the power to stop.

Now, Jessica must go into battle again. But Hell is a whole new beast -- new rules, more dangerous demons, and an entirely foreign realm. And when Jessica is dropped into the Underworld too soon, without protection or the help of her friends, she must figure out just how powerful she can be... or she will never make it out alive.

I really like the Jessica McClain series, is a good choice for those interested in urban fantasy for adults.

This is the fourth book in the series, Jessica does not rest because her brother was kidnapped by the prince of hell, in order to force her to descend to the underworld and all because of the prophecy that supposedly says she will caused chaos in the underworld.

So Jessica prepares to go to hell along with Ray and the Vampire Queen, but something goes wrong and Jessica ends up alone in hell, without help and tools she expected and with  all the demons and other creatures from hell hunting her, as she tries to rescue her brother.

The story so far is really good, but the four books have happened in less than a month (Jessica´s time), because due that the time in the underworld and our world runs differently, at the end of this book several months have passed on earth, while for Jessica it was only a few days. And because of this I felt that it lacked of interaction between Jessica with the other characters, as in this book we saw little of Naomi, Danny, James and Marcy ... and even Ray, Tyler and Rourke didn´t appear much in the story. Plus it´s necessary to develop a little bit more the romance between Jessica and Rourke, so they can finally have quality time together, since all the time they´re always running from one place to another, fighting against threats that are always present.

But overall, I enjoyed reading Red Blooded which still has a lot of action from the first chapter, the universe where the story takes place is still expanding, it has suspense, romance and several surprises and with an ending that leaves us hooked for the next book.

Top Ten Favorite Heroines From Books

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created bThe Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Favorite Heroines From Books
(in no particular order)

YA BOOKS
Darla from Sunrise (Ashfall #3) by Mike Mullin : Darla is a resourceful girl that its doing everything he can to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.
Wren from Rebel (Reboot #2) by Amy Tintera : Is a kick-butt heroine, she´s the strongest and fastest of the reboots.
Allison from The Forever Song (Blood of Eden #3) by Julie Kagawa : She´s a vampire with human feelings in a world where vampires are the bad guys, she can kick-butt and I like that her weapon of choice is a katana.

Iolanthe from The Perilous Sea (The Elemental Trilogy #2) by Sherry Thomas : Iolanthe is a powerful elemental mage she can control fire, water, air and earth,
Elisa from The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns #3) by Rae Carson : Elisa is the bearer of the Godstone (a magic stone) and can do defensive magic with it, but she doesn´t rely only on the magic of the stone, she also learns to fight with daggers and self-defense.

There are a lot of great kick-butt heroines in YA dystopian, urban fantasy and epic fantasy novels but these are my favorites from the recent years. I also like Katniss from the Hunger Games and Rose from Vampire Academy, but I read those books ages ago.

ADULT BOOKS
Kate from Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews : She´s a mercenary and can kick-butt, her weapon of choice is a sword.
Merit from Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires #1) by Chloe Neill : Another great heroine, she´s a vampire and her weapon of choice is some kind of sword.
Jessica from Full Blooded (Jessica McClain #1) by Amanda Carlson : She´s the only female werewolf in the world, she´s powerful but she´s still learning her powers.

Elena from Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong : Elena is also the only female werewolf, she´s strong, smart and fast.
Savannah from Spell Bound (Women of the Otherworld #12) by Kelley Armstrong : Savannah is a powerful witch that relies a lot on her magic, but she´s a relly good character.

There are also awesome heroines in Adult novels but I haven´t read a lot of them recently. I need to read more Adult books. I also like Mac from the Fever series.

Review: Perfect Ruin by Lauren DeStefano

Title: Perfect Ruin (The Internment Chronicles #1)
Author: Lauren DeStefano
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Release date: October 1st 2013

Rating: 3.5/5

Buy onAmazon | B&N | BookDepository
On the floating city of Internment, you can be anything you dream, unless you approach the edge. Morgan Stockhour knows getting too close can lead to madness, like her older brother Lex, a Jumper. She takes solace in her best friend Pen, and in Basil, the boy she’s engaged to marry. When she investigates the first murder in a generation, she meets Judas. The suspect was betrothed to the victim, but Morgan believes he is innocent. Nothing can prepare Morgan for the secrets she will find – or whom she will lose.

Perfect Ruin is another dystopian book (I still don´t get tired of them) and takes place on Internment, a city floating in the sky, where citizens live the "perfect" life, because there anyone can study or work in what they want, the births and departures (deaths) are controlled by the government, people are engaged from birth and everyone is free to do whatever they want as long as they stay away from the edge of town which for some reason incapacitates those who approach it and the persons that approach the edge are called Jumpers.

Morgan is a young woman who dreams of the world below, but because his brother Lex is a jumper and due his experience, she tries to keep to a minimum her curiosity about the unknown and tries to settle for life in city of Internment and accept her life, which to some extent she´s happy with her family, her best friend Pen and her fiance Basil, that is until a classmate is found dead, which is the first violent act that her generation has faced.

This murder creates panic among residents of the quiet city of Internment and when is suspected that the murder is Judas, the victim´s betrothed, something that Morgan is not so sure, she doesn´t believe him to be guilty, so she slowly begins to discover that her idyllic world, it is not really perfect.

Internment is a mixture of old and new, as there are some technology, because they have a train around the city and it can be seen other type technology in the city, but at least for me, it feels like it takes place in the first half of the last century, it gave me that idea for their by customs and manners.

What I liked the most of the story is the friendship between Pen and Morgan, they had known each other since childhood and you can feel their affection for each other and I also like friendship-romance between Morgan and her betrothed Basil, they also have known each other all their life and you can feel the love-friendship between them and although is not a great romance, they´re both happy with being betrothed to each other.

Overall, Perfect Ruin is a good first book in a trilogy, because it takes its time to describe the world where it develops, how society works, why it is believed that the floating city is in the sky and how the government works. The plot has its elements of mystery, intrigue, romance with a dose of friendship and some interesting twists, plus it has lovable characters. I recommend this book for dystopian fans.

Waiting On Wednesday(160): Undertow

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The book I´m waiting this week is

Undertow (Undertow #1) by Michael Buckley
Release date: May 5th 2015
Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s only hope of survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

Action, suspense, and romance whirlpool dangerously in this cinematic saga, a blend of District 9 and The Outsiders.

Why I'm Waiting?
I´m intrigued by this book, it sounds good and I want to know what kind of "creatures" are the Alphas.

Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Title: Red Queen (Red Queen Trilogy #1)
Author: Victoria Aveyard

Format: eARC

Rating: 4/5

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace itself, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own—an ability she didn't know she had. Except . . . her blood is Red.

To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard—the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince—and Mare against her own heart.

From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart and the only certainty is betrayal.

I have mixed feelings about this book, as there were aspects of the story that I liked a lot, especially the ending and the last chapters are really good but later on go into the plot, but I was not engrossed from the start, it took me a while to get hooked, plus there were some details that I made me some noise, but at the end I really enjoyed Red Queen.

I´ve read that this book is compared to The Selection, Graceling and even Red Rising, but as I have not read any of them, I started my reading without any preconceived idea and I just started to enjoy it.

In Red Queen the society is literally divided by the color of blood, the Silvers and the Reds. The Silver are the privileged class, the royalty and all of them have powers like the X-MEN, while the Reds are the servants and those that don´t have a job or apprenticeship upon turning 18 years old are sent to war.

Mare is a 17 year old girl, she´s a Red and has no job, so at her eighteen birthday she´ll be conscripted, but due fate or luck she ends up getting a job as a maid in the summer home of the royal family, it seems that at last her luck is changing, but due to an accident people discover that she also has a power, that had never seen before and the fact that she´s Red makes it impossible, but to cover up such rarity, the King decides of passing her off as a Silver, until they know more about her and her power. So in the blink of an eye her life is completely changed and she´s in prime location.

For those who like me like their books with romance in them, I can only comment that there is some romance, just not very intense, but the good news is that there isn´t insta-love, no love triangle ..... but there is a love square (¿?), because there are three young men romantically "interested" in Mare.

A secondary plot are the rebels - Scarlet Guard - which are making several violent acts in order to achieve freedom and equality of the Reds.

I liked the world where the story unfolds and I have some theories about it, as it is a mixture of old world with some sort of technology.

I really enjoyed Red Queen, because it has a lot of action, I liked the X-MEN style fights, the romance not so much, but I liked the intrigue and uncertainty, the pace of the story is a bit slow and there is predictability in the plot, but I liked a lot the ending and the last chapters are really good.

Review: The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand

There's death all around us.
We just don't pay attention.
Until we do.

The last time Lex was happy, it was before. When she had a family that was whole. A boyfriend she loved. Friends who didn't look at her like she might break down at any moment.

Now she's just the girl whose brother killed himself. And it feels like that's all she'll ever be.

As Lex starts to put her life back together, she tries to block out what happened the night Tyler died. But there's a secret she hasn't told anyone-a text Tyler sent, that could have changed everything.

Lex's brother is gone. But Lex is about to discover that a ghost doesn't have to be real to keep you from moving on.

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand, The Last Time We Say Goodbye is a gorgeous and heart-wrenching story of love, loss, and letting go.

The Last Time We Say Goodbye an emotional and sad contemporary book about teen suicide. Lex's younger brother sends her a text message and soon after he commits suicide, so she feels responsible for his death and for most of the book we do not know what the message said, until near the end we get to know what it said; she blames herself and her father, and she´s constantly angry with those around her, so she push away her friends, broke up with her boyfriend and begins to have problems in her classes (she's in advanced classes and her goal is to go to MIT). Through Lexie´s memories we get to see how close she was with his brother and how both got along very well. This book is about the loss of a loved one, how it affects them and and how to cope.

Besides Lex and her mother, a character that we don´t get to see much but is important for Lex, is her ex boyfriend Steven, he goes to the same advanced classes, so he´s a quietly present in Lex´s life.

The beginning of the book is slow and gradually introducing us to Lex´s life, she´s going to therapy, because she isn´t expressing her feelings about the suicide of her brother, which happened seven weeks before, so her therapist gives her a notebook to write in her memories of her brother, but not necessarily sad things, but also the happy moments as Lex needs to let out her feelings, so she gradually begins to write in her notebook about her brother and through these memories we get to know Tyler, we see the love they had for each other, but we also see his dark moments. I loved the time she writes in the book, I felt it very special.

This was a very sad story about how affects to a family the suicide of a brother/son, about how those involved put their life on hold, while the world keeps moving, and how slowly they can get on with their lives. The end is very emotional, in one moment I was reading it, and I was thinking this is really sad but just that and all of the suddent I was crying like a baby, my emotions were all over the place.

Red Queen is a book where the society is divided by the color of blood; the Silvers  are the privileged class, the royalty and all the Silvers have special powers, whether they can control fire or water or metal or nature, etc. - their powers remind me a little of the X-MEN -. Then there are the Reds, the working class, which if at the age of 18 years old have failed to be apprentices, are sent to war and our main character - Mare is about to turn 18 years old and soon will be sent to war, but a change in her luck gets her a job in the royal summer palace, which could bring up more trouble than she expected.

Another book I read this week was Red Blooded, which is the fourth book in the Jessica McClain series, about the only female werewolf in the world and all the problems that brings to be her.  I really like this series a lot.

You can read my review of Full Blooded - hereHot Blooded - here
Magic, mayhem and madness explode in this third installment in the Jessica McClain series.

Jessica McClain is on the run... again.

Finally reunited with Rourke, Jessica arrives home to find that her best friend has been kidnapped, her father has vanished, and the supernatural Sects -- witches, demons, and sorcerers --- don't even have the courtesy to wait until she is unpacked to attack.

Now, mastering her powers as the sole female werewolf might not be enough to save them. Thrown together in a shaky truce with the Vampire Queen, Jessica must show all the different Sects what the true meaning of "the enemy of my enemy" is or her father will die...

Cold Blooded is the third book in the Jessica McClain series and poor Jessica doesn´t rest at all, she barely recovered her mate from the clutches of a goddess who had planned to keep him, when her best friend is kidnapped in order to use her as bait and so they can capture Jessica.

This series it keeps getting better because there is more action, there is finally some romance but not much, because seriously all the supernaturals in the planet or want her dead or want to capture her or intend to gain some advantage by using her in some way, all this due to a prophecy - which still do not know much about it - Jessica will be the perdition or salvation of the supernatural world, plus by each passing day she becomes more powerful and if I remember correctly I think still has not been a month since her first change as a werewolf.

In Cold Blooded we get to know more about the aforementioned sects such as witches, sorcerers and demons, without counting that Jessica has to pay a visit before their agreement to the Vampire Queen, which is not very happy with her.

Jessica is a good hero that has to face many obstacles and problems with other races but so far has emerged victorious, but someone should sincerely give her a break to let her know her new skills and find out more about her prophecy. She´s very strong, very powerful, but everyone knows more about Jessica than herself,

Cold Blooded has lots of action, there is finally some romance and has a cliffhanger ending that left me wanting to read Red Blooded ASAP.
I recommend this series to adult urban fantasy fans.

Waiting On Wednesday (158): The Night We Said Yes

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The book I´m waiting this week is

The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi
Release date: June 16th 2015
Before Matt, Ella had a plan. Get over a no-good ex-boyfriend. Graduate from high school without any more distractions. Move away from Orlando, Florida, where she’s lived her entire life.

But Matt—the cute, shy, bespectacled bass player who just moved to town—was never part of that plan.

And neither was attending a party that was crashed by the cops just minutes after they arrived. Or spending an entire night saying “yes” to every crazy, fun thing they could think of.

Then Matt abruptly left town, and he broke not only Ella’s heart but those of their best friends, too. So when he shows up a year later with a plan of his own—to relive the night that brought them together—Ella isn’t sure whether Matt’s worth a second chance. Or if re-creating the past can help them create a different future.

In alternating then and now chapters, debut author Lauren Gibaldi crafts a charming, romantic story of first loves, lifelong friendships, uncovered secrets, and, ultimately, finding out how to be brave.

A teenage boy tries to understand his best friend's suicide by listening to the playlist of songs he left behind in this smart, voice-driven debut novel.

Here's what Sam knows: There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, his best friend, Hayden, was dead. And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs, and a suicide note: For Sam—listen and you'll understand.

As he listens to song after song, Sam tries to face up to what happened the night Hayden killed himself. But it's only by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he will finally be able to piece together his best friend’s story. And maybe have a chance to change his own.

Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Tim Tharp’s The Spectacular Now, Playlist for the Dead is an honest and gut-wrenching first novel about loss, rage, what it feels like to outgrow a friendship that's always defined you—and the struggle to redefine yourself. But above all, it's about finding hope when hope seems like the hardest thing to find.

Playlist of the Dead is a contemporary book about teen suicide.

Sam is a sixteen year old boy, he´s smart but that he doesn´t fit on a single high school label and he has one best friend.

Sam´s best and only friend Hayden, commits suicide and leaves a playlist to Sam with the message "listen and you'll understand" so that he spends his time just listening his iPod all the time, trying to understand why his best friend committed suicide,, if your dead best friend leave you a playlist is for something - right? - And between feeling guilty due a discussion he had with him the day he died and blaming others, he continues with his life until a girl that seem to know Hayden and that inadvertently is giving him clues or ideas about some of the song that he doesn´t place of find any meaning of them, Sam gradually begins to open to new friends and discover new things about his best friend .... while trying to understand his suicide.

Something that I liked - but I did not hear all the songs - is that the name of each chapter is a song from the playlist that Hayden left.

Playlist for the Dead is primarily about bullying, teen suicide, lost and trying to find an explanation to it. This story has a bit of mystery, as Sam begins to have an online "friend" that lets him strange messages. The explanation of this online friend left me a bit unsatisfied, but the book was okay.
