Review: By Your Side by Kasie West

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

This is the fifth book written by Kasie West that I´ve read and although it isn´t one of my favorites, I did enjoyed it a lot.

At the beginning of the story Autumn is locked inside a library after she was with a large group of friends and by mistake she leaves her bag with her cell phone in the trunk of one of the cars, so she doesn´t have means to communicate and for reasons explained in the book, her parents do not expect her to return home that night, so it is credible to some extent that she is locked in a public library for several days, but I´m not very sure why there aren´t telephones accessible in the areas to which she has access, but as it´s a fiction book so I pretend that everything is possible. And locked up with her is Dax, a schoolmate who has a reputation for being dangerous because he spent a few months in a juvenile reformatory, so at the beginning of their lockup they come to an arrangement to coexist until the library is open, but through their time together they get to know each other a little and Dex discovers Autumn´s, a secret that only her family knows, which is what makes them to a certain extent partners in crime, because Dax knows something about her that no one else knows.

The book is not only the story of them locked up at the library, but it also is about them returning to their normal life and how they interact at school, with her friends and the drama of the love triangle. I liked the interaction between Autumn and Dax, since it isn´t insta-love since they know each other from school, only that they had never interacted before and how after the library and the secrets they shared, how they start to have a connection that turns to attraction.

I do recommend it to those who like cute YA books with some light drama.

STARFALL Launch Blitz & Giveaway

Hi, booklovers!

I’m author Melissa Landers, and I’m so excited to launch STARFALL, the second and final book in my Starflight duology! This story picks up shortly after the first book ends, but now Cassia and Kane are the main characters, with Doran, Solara, and the rest of the Banshee crew pitching in to help take down an intergalactic mafia. (You know, just an ordinary day in space.) And while saying goodbye to characters is never easy, I think I gave the crew a proper sendoff with plenty of humor, heart, and action. I hope you love STARFALL as much as I do!

Haven’t read the first book? You’re in luck, because for a limited time, Starflight is on sale for 99 cents in all e-formats. Now you can binge read the entire duology in one sitting!

Praise for Starflight:

“Smart, action-packed and utterly addictive!” –New York Times bestselling author Amie Kaufman

Starflight has the cinematic appeal, warp-speed action and unlikely heroes of Star Wars.” –Justine Magazine

“A lively tale of romance, space pirates, conspiracy, and made (as opposed to genetic) families.” –Booklist

“A great choice for fans of raw sci-fi action, reminiscent of the lawlessness presented in the television series Firefly.” –School Library Journal

If you love sci-fi adventure with a dash of romance, I hope you’ll pick up the Starflight duology today. Starflight and Starfall are both available in stores and online.

Review: Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken

Title: Wayfarer (Passenger #2)
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Release date: January 3rd 2017

Rating: 4.25/5

You can read my review of Passenger - here
All Etta Spencer wanted was to make her violin debut when she was thrust into a treacherous world where the struggle for power could alter history. After losing the one thing that would have allowed her to protect the Timeline, and the one person worth fighting for, Etta awakens alone in an unknown place and time, exposed to the threat of the two groups who would rather see her dead than succeed. When help arrives, it comes from the last person Etta ever expected—Julian Ironwood, the Grand Master’s heir who has long been presumed dead, and whose dangerous alliance with a man from Etta’s past could put them both at risk.

Meanwhile, Nicholas and Sophia are racing through time in order to locate Etta and the missing astrolabe with Ironwood travelers hot on their trail. They cross paths with a mercenary-for-hire, a cheeky girl named Li Min who quickly develops a flirtation with Sophia. But as the three of them attempt to evade their pursuers, Nicholas soon realizes that one of his companions may have ulterior motives.

As Etta and Nicholas fight to make their way back to one another, from Imperial Russia to the Vatican catacombs, time is rapidly shifting and changing into something unrecognizable… and might just run out on both of them.

Wayfarer is the second book and conclusion of the Passenger duology and it´s really good, I enjoyed it.

Etta Spencer and Nicholas Carter, are the main characters of this story and both can travel in time, they travel through portals and the fact of being a traveler is a hereditary trait, Etta comes from the Linden family and Nicholas is illegitimate son of the Ironwood family and they live in a world where the Ironwood family has almost eradicated the rest of the families of travelers and where the Grand Master (Nicholas's grandfather) has changed the story to benefit himself at expense of his direct family, meanwhile what remains of the Hemlock family (known as Thorns) is trying to reverse the changes in the timeline that the Ironwood have made.

And in the middle of this war between these two families are Etta and Nicholas, they´re searching the astrolabe with the intention of destroying it, a device that falling into the wrong hands could change the lives of many travelers. At the end of the previous book Etta and Nicholas are separated and Nicholas does not know in which century Etta is thrown and decides to look for her something that is not easy since he has no idea where to start, so with the help of Sophia begins his search, meanwhile there are a group of assassins that´s following him.

It is told from dual points of view, Etta´s and Nicholas´s, with alternating chapters so that we follow them through their adventures through time, the tests that they have to go through (especially Nicholas) and we get to see how some of events in history are changing.

On this book my favorite character was Nicholas, since despite having a hard life, having suffered at the hand of his own family (being his grandfather one of the most cruel against him) and the fact that his skin color had caused him problems, he´s a noble person.

Overall, Wayfarer is full of adventure, action and some romance, with good characters and an end that left me satisfied. I really loved it!.
