When Ileni lost her magic, she lost everything: her place in society, her purpose in life, and the man she had expected to spend her life with. So when the Elders sent her to be magic tutor to a secret sect of assassins, she went willingly, even though the last two tutors had died under mysterious circumstances.

But beneath the assassins’ caves, Ileni will discover a new place and a new purpose… and a new and dangerous love. She will struggle to keep her lost magic a secret while teaching it to her deadly students, and to find out what happened to the two tutors who preceded her. But what she discovers will change not only her future, but the future of her people, the assassins… and possibly the entire world.

I have lately read more YA fantasy and I´m really starting to like very much this genre, since previously I didn´t read many fantasy books because my favorite is the dystopian and paranormal genre. And although I definitely didn´t love Death Sworn, I did enjoy reading it.

In Death Sworn, Ileni the main character, is a sorcerer that´s losing her power and the elders of her community sent her to be the tutor of assassins because their community has a truce with the Master of the assassins and this includes that they must provide them a permanent tutor. And the interesting thing about this is that they also sent her to investigate the murder of the two tutors that preceded her.

Ileni is a sorceress, she belongs to a group of sorcerers known as the Renegai and up to 6 months ago she was the best of her generation, with a very promising future, but after discovering that her magic was failing her (and that it will continue to decrease gradually until in a near future she´ll be powerless), her life changes completely because her people no longer look her as someone valuable for the community, so that´s why the elder´s decide sent her to the assassins´s cave in a mission that´ll endangers her life and from which she will never come back. So she arrived with a mindset that she will not live long and that at any moment she could be killed like his predecessors and she´s okay with it.

The book is a fast read and I like that the romance is not insta-love, not even insta-attraction at the beginning and what I loved most is how romantic is Sorin (this is me being sarcastic), because he is cold, he doesn´t show any emotions and he´s the killer assign the protection of Ileni within the cave. Sorin has been trained since childhood to be a assassin and he´s honored to be chosen for a mission, his purpose in life is to obey the orders of his Master, be sent to many missions and die honorable in one of them.

The assassins´s cave is where the whole story takes place, is like a subterranean city inside a mountain, lit by magical stones, and for centuries a place where assassin are trained, the population consists of only men (that is until Ileni comes to live there) of different ages, which are divided in groups by age, there they´re trained by teachers in various "arts" necessary to make them deadly weapons and all the "students" are there since they were kids, either because they were "donated" to the cause, kidnapped or as in Sorin´s case were parentless children living in the streets. All students follow the orders of their Master of the assassins blindly, they almost see him as a messiah, and they do whatever he orders them to do, because he knows everything and has a plan that everyone should follow to recover the Empire which was taken over by a tyrant centuries ago.

About the world-building, I felt that it needed a little more development, since the whole story takes place inside the caves and there is rarely mentioned the Empire that they´re trying to defeat, all highlighting about the empire is that their sorcerers use dark magic, but otherwise there is not much known about them. But with what happens at the end, I´m looking forward reading the next book.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Review: Panic by Lauren Oliver

Title: Panic
Author: Lauren Oliver

Format: eARC

Rating: 3/5

Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

I think I should start by saying this book was not at all what I was expecting, because when I read the synopsis I thought that this one was a dystopian book and as I liked the Delirium trilogy by the same author and her writing style, that´s why I put this book as a priority on my wishlist, but Panic is NOT A DYSTOPIAN BOOK, it´s a CONTEMPORARY NOVEL.

The story unfolds in Carp, a small town in New York where most of the population have a medium-low to low socioeconomic status and where every summer for the past few years, the high school seniors/graduates play Panic, no one knows how or when it started, but most of the seniors play it, and why do they compete in the game? because the winner gets $ 67,000 Dlls (this money is collected during the school year and whether each student will participate or not they should give 1 dollar per day). What is Panic? it´s a game where contestants must undergo various extreme tests/games that can literally put their life in danger and in each test some contestants are eliminated and as the game progresses the tests get more dangerous and daring, until at the end of the game there is only one winner.

Panic is told from the point of view of Heather and Dodge, alternating between the two, Heather is a girl who starts the game for the wrong reasons, but she continues in the game due to family problems and because she needs the money. Heather spends most of his time with her best friends Natalie and Bishop, Nat also participates in the game.

Meanwhile Dodge also participates in the game Panic, not for the money, but because he wants revenge on one of the players and what better place than in a game where anything can happen and anyone can end up hurt.

Overall, I liked it but I didn´t loved it, the pacing of the story is slow (very slow), some parts of the plot were predictable, but what I liked was that the romance is not obvious, is not instant love, there isn´t a love triangle and at the end both Heather and Dodge end up with whom they expected or wanted (Although not with whom I was expecting), besides of that the romance is not the main focus of the story, the main plot is the game and the motivations of the players to be in it. And about the ending.... it felt a bit rushed for my taste, especially the last test or challenge. At the end I did liked Panic, but not as much as I was hoping.

And I repeat this is NOT A DYSTOPIAN BOOK, but it is a CONTEMPORARY REALISTIC novel and I didn´t see any resemblance at all to the Hunger Games book (I've heard that some people compared it to THG). Oh and something good about Panic is that it´s a standalone.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

Review: Let the Storm Break by Shannon Messenger

Title: Let the Storm Break (Sky Fall #2)
Author: Shannon Messenger

Source: Edelweiss
Format: eARC

Rating: 3.5/5

You can read my review of  Let the Sky Fall - here
Vane Weston is haunted. By the searing pull of his bond to Audra. By the lies he’s told to cover for her disappearance. By the treacherous winds that slip into his mind, trying to trap him in his worst nightmares. And as his enemies grow stronger, Vane doesn’t know how much longer he can last on his own.

But Audra’s still running. From her past. From the Gales. Even from Vane, who she doesn’t believe she deserves. And the farther she flees, the more danger she finds. She possesses the secret power her enemy craves, and protecting it might be more than she can handle—especially when she discovers Raiden’s newest weapon.

With the Gale Force weakened by recent attacks, and the power of four collapsing, Vane and Audra are forced to make a choice: keep trusting the failing winds, or turn to the people who’ve betrayed them before. But even if they survive the storms sent to destroy them, will they have anything left to hold on to?

I've been waiting for this sequel for almost a year because I really liked the world building of this book and I think that idea of this novel is original or at least to me because I haven´t read any books about sylphs.

If you´re wondering what´s a sylph? well, according to the world created by Shannon Messenger, the sylphs are human-shaped creatures that are part of the air, they can walk in the wind, talk to the wind and can dominate or control the wind, which can be used as a weapon. And the sylphs are divided into four groups, the North Wind, the South Wind, the East Wind and the West Wind and the one who controls the four winds are believed to be the most powerful of all. That´s why Raiden, the villain in story has sought to seize this knowledge and even though he has failed to do that because he knows the language of only three winds, he has failed to learned the language of the west wind....why?...because the sylphs from the west are creatures that believe in peace above all and they decided to not to share their language for fear that it may be misused, so now after years of war between Raiden and the Gale Force (which are like the police or army of sylphs), there is only one Westerly alive ..... Vane Weston.

Vane is a very interesting character and a very funny one because he doesn´t take himself very seriously, he speaks of himself in third person and because he´s the last Westerly, the Gale Force decided to name him their king, this of course will be official once he defeats Raiden and the war between them is finally over. But there is one small detail about him .... Vane like all the Westerlies before him, is a pacifist, incapable of committing a violent act, the mere thought or perform an act of violence make him sick literally (he usually sort of fainted, has nausea and almost vomit every time he thinks about it ) and so does the thought of sharing his language with other sylphs, because it could fall into the wrong hands and that would be catastrophic. So Vane is a young man who was raised by humans parents and grew up believing to be a human, so now that he find out that he´s a sylph and the king of them and that he must marry the daughter of the former king and Gale Force expected him to be their leader and accept his responsibilities, of course he doesn´t agree with all of them, and his main objection is his engagement to Solana, because he has fallen in love with Audra, his previous guardian.

Meanwhile Audra is trying to come to terms with what her mother do and all the pain that she caused to her and Vane, that in addition to being bonded to Vane, something she didn´t expect to happen. And this book is told from dual POVs, alternating between the main characters.

Let the Storm Break has more action ( I liked the battles) than the previous book and more suspense mainly because at last we get to know the villain of the story, they´re also new characters that appear to be key to the plot, from which I liked the most....Gus or Gusty, he´s Vane´s new guardian and his character has so much potential to be a hero. And it has a cliffhanger ending. But overall, I really enjoyed this book and now I´ve to wait a year to see what will happen with Vane, Audra and Gus, can´t wait to read the next installment.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

Rating: 4/5

Zoe and her best friend, Olivia, have always had big plans for the future, none of which included Olivia getting sick. Still, Zoe is determined to put on a brave face and be positive for her friend.

Even when she isn't sure what to say.

Even when Olivia misses months of school.

Even when Zoe starts falling for Calvin, Olivia's crush.

The one thing that keeps Zoe moving forward is knowing that Olivia will beat this, and everything will go back to the way it was before. It has to. Because the alternative is too terrifying for her to even imagine.

In this incandescent page-turner, which follows in the tradition of The Fault in Our Stars, Melissa Kantor artfully explores the idea that the worst thing to happen to you might not be something that is actually happening to you. Raw, irreverent, and honest, Zoe's unforgettable voice and story will stay with readers long after the last page is turned.

Maybe One Day is compared (at least in the synopsis) with The Fault in Our Stars, a book that I have not read yet, so I can´t say if the comparison is true or not. Actually I think this is the first book I´ve read about a cancer patient (if I remember correctly) and the theme is a little difficult for me because my father died of cancer and although it was a different type of cancer that the one that Olivia had in this story, I could not help to relate with the story.

This is the story of seventeen year-old Zoe and Olivia, they have been best friends for thirteen years, they have always been just the two of them, had never been anyone more between them, they have gone to the same school, belonged to a professional ballet school, so they spend almost all the time together, at school, after school, at sleepovers, etc. (they are together 24/7). So when they learn that Olivia has a rare type of leukemia (at least for teenagers), which is very aggressive and needs immediate treatment, .... their world falls apart, since both are very dependent on each other.

The main idea of the story and most importantly is FRIENDSHIP, because Zoe is always there for Olivia and how Olivia needs Zoe by her side in these difficult times between treatments and remissions. The friendship between them is pure, they never resent or envy the other, they literally know each other completely and they´re like family to each other.

The story is told from Zoe´s POV, and from the two of them, she´s doesn´t know what to do with her life, she doesn´t has the best feelings (because at the time she learns Olivia is sick, she wish that Jake, Olivia 's brother was the one that was sick and not Olivia), she´s a little bitter and snarky with her comments about other classmates ..... so Zoe is totally imperfect and there were times that I didn´t like her. Olivia meanwhile is a good person, she likes to help others, has good feelings and she´s stronger than Zoe. But both are very loyal to each other.

Overall, the most important in the book is the FRIENDSHIP between Olivia and Zoe, the way they complement each other and how they support each other during difficult times. There is a little bit of romance but not the focus of the plot. I really enjoy reading Maybe One Day, is a very emotional book and it made my cry (nothing new to me).

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

Review: Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi

Title: Through the Ever Night (Under the Never Sky #2)

Release date: January 8th 2013

Rating: 5/5

You can read my review of Under the Never Sky - here
It's been months since Aria learned of her mother's death.

Months since Perry became Blood Lord of the Tides, and months since Aria last saw him.

Now Aria and Perry are about to be reunited. It's a moment they've been longing for with countless expectations. And it's a moment that lives up to all of them. At least, at first.

Then it slips away. The Tides don't take kindly to former Dwellers like Aria. And the tribe is swirling out of Perry's control. With the Aether storms worsening every day, the only remaining hope for peace and safety is the Still Blue. But does this haven truly exist? Threatened by false friends and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and sci-fi elements to create a captivating adventure—a love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.

Through the Ever Night is second book in the Under the Never Sky trilogy and it´s even better than its predecessor, I read both back o back because after the end of the previous book I just needed to know what would happen with Aria and Perry, my intention was to just read the first few chapters to find out what was going on because I had planned to read another book that week,  but I just could not stop reading it and before I knew it I already had read at least half the book and decided to continue with it (book for review forgotten).

Actually this book hooked me from the start because is full of action, adventure, betrayal, intrigue and romance (during the whole book I spend it trying to figure out who was going to betray him or her, thanks to the synopsis).

On Through the Night Ever we see all the prejudice that Perry and Aria have to face because of their relationship, and coupled with this Perry is trying to cement his place as Blood Lord of the Tides, so he has many responsibilities and several members of his tribe are not happy with Perry as their leader.

And as I had mentioned before, Roar is a very likable character and my favorite so far, in this book he has a more important role and he spend more time with Aria, but what I liked is that they never feel something more than friendship for one another, their friendship is pure and it that grows more during their journey to find information about the Still Blue. I thank the author that there isn´t love triangle in this story because Roar is so great, funny, he lightens the plot and I really like him a lot I wouldn´t want him to be second best.

Something that I really liked is that I finally got to know Liv (Perry´s sister and Roar´s romantic interest), she definitely was not what I had expected and at first I did not know if I liked her or not. But I really liked her with Roar and that is all I'll say about them.

Overall, I really LOVED this book and I had already mentioned it´s even better than Under the Never Sky, I enjoyed it immensely, I liked the world where Perry and Aria live (although I wouldn´t trade places with them) and in this book I got to know more about it, this book also had lovable characters (loved Perry, Aria and Roar), it was easy to get attached to them and it had a good ending (no cliffhanger...yay!) and I can´t wait to read Into the Still Blue.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted by Book Journey.
Each week we spotlight the books we are reading, planning on reading or just finished reading.

Finished reading

Maybe One Day, it´s a book about Olivia and Zoe, who had been best friends for 13 years, and in their junior year they learn that Olivia has leukemia, and this book focuses on the friendship between this two girls and how is important for Olivia to count with the support during these difficult moments of her best friend.

Let the Storm Break it´s the second book in the trilogy Let the Sky Fall, the story is entertaining so far, but I do not like as much as the first book.

Currently reading
I´ve read 10% of the book and I'm on the introduction of the game called Panic, but it looks good so far.

What I´m going to read next?
