Mercedes Thompson, aka Mercy, is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...

Moon Called is the first book in the Mercy Thompson series (there are 10 books so far), and its a compelling and enjoyable urban fantasy book.

Mercy lives in a world where werewolves, vampires, fairies, witches and other supernatural creatures exist, in fact she´s a coyote shape shifter, which is known as a walker. Mercy does not know another walker like her, so as a child she was adopted into a pack of werewolves where she was always different, she´s acquaintance with pack politics but since she left the pack were she grew up as a teenager, she tries to stay out of werewolf politics.

Mercy work as a mechanic and as much as she tries to stay away from the local wolf pack, it´s a little difficult because Adam the pack alpha is her neighbor and she is a good friend of Jesse her teenage daughter. And when a young werewolf arrives at her shop asking for work, Mercy agrees to help him, without knowing the danger that´s is following.

Mercy is a tenacious, clever, strong hero, although not physically, since being a walker only transforms her into a coyote but she does not have super strength, nor her wounds heal quickly, the great advantage she has,  is that she´s supernatural fast in her coyote form and she has a good nose.

Overall, Moon Called is a good first book in a series, the plot has a good rhythm, has no slow or boring moments, I had some problems with how is resolves at the end, but nothing unforgivable, we also see the beginning of a love triangle, but do not expect romance in this book. I do recommend it to urban fantasy fans.
