In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons get to be whomever they want. Tess, stubbornly, is a troublemaker. You can't make a scene at your sister's wedding and break a relative's nose with one punch (no matter how pompous he is) and not suffer the consequences. As her family plans to send her to a nunnery, Tess yanks on her boots and sets out on a journey across the Southlands, alone and pretending to be a boy.

Where Tess is headed is a mystery, even to her. So when she runs into an old friend, it's a stroke of luck. This friend is a quigutl--a subspecies of dragon--who gives her both a purpose and protection on the road. But Tess is guarding a troubling secret. Her tumultuous past is a heavy burden to carry, and the memories she's tried to forget threaten to expose her to the world in more ways than one.

I loved Seraphina and Shadow Scale written by the same author, so when I saw that it was going to be another book in the same world, I knew that I had to read it.

Tess of the Road features sixteen-year-old Tess Dombegh, half-sister of Seraphina (main character of the Seraphina duology). Tess has spent the last two years in the court of Goredd, trying to get her twin sister a husband, but now that she has fulfilled her mission and her sister is about to get married, she has two options to enter a convent or to go live with her twin sister and future husband, and be the governess of her future nephews and nieces, but Tess makes a mistake and reveals a secret that could endanger her sister's marriage, so after the uproar her family decides to send her to the convent. But in the end Tess decides to flee and try to start a new life in the Kingdom of Ninys where nobody knows her and for greater security she decides to dress as a boy, since traveling as a woman is very dangerous. On the road she meets Pathka, a quigutl (a small species of sub-dragon), a childhood friend and someone who always told her fantastic stories about the huge snakes that lived under the earth. So once reunited they decide to travel together and look for these mythical creatures.

Tess had been impulsive and daring all her life, easy to get into trouble, in fact as a child she had the nickname "spank magnet", due to the spanks she received every time she got into trouble for her pranks, unlike her twin sister who always did the right thing and the proper thing of a lady. But due to a mistake she made when she was thirteen years old, her future change and despite her young age, she became bitter and resentful, in addition to having problems with alcohol, to mitigate her feelings of guilt.

Tess of the Road is about the journey of a young girl who tries to find her place in the world after having made mistakes that left her marked, as well as learning to love herself and forgive herself, in order to start a new life and not just run away from her problems.

Initially I was not liking the story because Tess is not a likeable person, so it took me a while to like the book, especially since I was waiting to see Seraphina, to which we get to see a little. Tess in the course of the story goes from a bitter and angry young woman to a woman who is learning her place in a difficult world where she lives because is a world difficult for a single women, without the protection of her family. In the end I liked it, it has a good ending that got me hooked to read the next book.

You can read my review of Seraphina - here
The kingdom of Goredd: a world where humans and dragons share life with an uneasy balance, and those few who are both human and dragon must hide the truth. Seraphina is one of these, part girl, part dragon, who is reluctantly drawn into the politics of her world. When war breaks out between the dragons and humans, she must travel the lands to find those like herself—for she has an inexplicable connection to all of them, and together they will be able to fight the dragons in powerful, magical ways.

As Seraphina gathers this motley crew, she is pursued by humans who want to stop her. But the most terrifying is another half dragon, who can creep into people’s minds and take them over. Until now, Seraphina has kept her mind safe from intruders, but that also means she’s held back her own gift. It is time to make a choice: Cling to the safety of her old life, or embrace a powerful new destiny?

Shadow Scale bring us back to Goredd, the city where Seraphina lives, which is preparing for war against the dragons who want to break the treaty with humans, so the Queen Glissenda decide to try to bring together all the half-dragons in order to see if they can help in the war, because is suspected that most of them have unique powers that could be useful in combat against dragons. And because Seraphina is a half-dragon and also has a link with others like her, through visions, she´s sent on a mission in order to collect them and bring them to Goredd, so she must look for them in the other Kingdoms, and during her journey she finds allies and friends, but also finds people who see the half-dragons as aberrations, so that her mission will not be easy. On this journey, her constant companion is Abdo a 12-year-old half-dragon boy that can see the "light" emanating from his race.

During her trip Seraphina start having problems with a half-dragon that can influence and take over the mind of the other half-dragons, with whom Seraphina had had a confrontation before when she was a little girl and at that time she could successfully ban her from her mind . But now it seems she has become mentally stronger and has her own agenda in the war that is about to happen between humans and dragons.

I loved this book, the only thing I had issue was the romance, which although it isn´t the main part of the plot, at least for me it was important, because Seraphina and Lucian are great together and they had not enough interaction during the book (this is my opinion), but the few interactions they had were great and loved them.

And for the epilogue, I can only say that it was bittersweet with a touch of hope. I liked it although it saddened me. And I would greatly appreciate if in the future the author decides to write a short story or novella.

Overall, Shadow Scale is an amazing book, the plot is fascinating and unforgettable, it´s beautifully written, has its fair share of action, interesting twists and turns in the plot and lost of intrigue ... there were times when Seraphina could not trust anyone. I loved it! It makes me sad to know that this is the conclusion of Seraphina´s story. I highly recommend this duology for fans of epic fantasy books.

Review: Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Title: Seraphina (Seraphina #1)

In the kingdom of Goredd, dragons and humans live and work side by side – while below the surface, tensions and hostility simmer.

The newest member of the royal court, a uniquely gifted musician named Seraphina, holds a deep secret of her own. One that she guards with all of her being.

When a member of the royal family is brutally murdered, Seraphina is drawn into the investigation alongside the dangerously perceptive—and dashing—Prince Lucien. But as the two uncover a sinister plot to destroy the wavering peace of the kingdom, Seraphina’s struggle to protect her secret becomes increasingly difficult… while its discovery could mean her very life.

This is one of those books that once I finished reading it, I keep thinking about it and remembering details I liked. I really loved the way dragons are described and the fact that they can take human form.

After years of dragons attacks into the human cities, for the past 40 years there has been peace between humans and dragons, because the Queen and Ardmagar (the dragon leader) signed a treaty, but now that it approaches its anniversary of the truce, Prince Rufus was killed and is suspected to have been committed by a dragon which would violate the treaty and if that was true it could break it. That´s why the Captain of the Guard must clarify the murder as soon as possible, as this is creating hostility toward the dragons and due to a misunderstanding between Seraphina and Captain of the Guard, she ends up helping him with the investigation.

Seraphina is an insecure and reserved young woman, that recently started working as an assistant to the royal composer Viridus, she lives in the Royal Palace, there she gradually begins to be noticed by the princes, first by Princess Grisselda, to whom she teach music, but is her knowledge of dragons behavior that makes her stand out and then by Prince Lucian Riggs, who is betrothed to the princess, besides of being the Captain of the Guard, so they end up assisting each other in the research related to dragons. I liked the interactions between Prince Lucian and Seraphina.

Seraphina has a secret that could bring her problems if its known, for this reason she has always led a quiet life without friends and without calling attention to itself. She feels a special affection for her teacher the dragon Orma, whom she had known since childhood and thanks to this she has an extensive knowledge of dragons, their behavior and their thinking.

I really liked the way the dragons are represented and in their human form they don´t show feelings, since it´s considered unnecessary, dragons are intelligent, very logical in their thinking and very direct in their speech. So Seraphina interactions with Orma are very entertaining.

The world building is well defined and very vivid. I loved it!. And the author writing is beautiful, it´s easy to imagine the world where Seraphina lives.

Overall, Seraphina is GREAT read, it´s a very entertaining epic fantasy novel, which is beautifully crafted with good and lovable characters, with its dose of action, suspense, mystery and romance. I highly recommend it for fans of epic fantasy books.
