Don't You Wish by Roxanne St. Claire

Read except here

When plain and unpopular Annie Nutter gets zapped by one of her dad's whacked-out inventions, she lands in a parallel universe where her life becomes picture-perfect. Now she's Ayla Monroe, daughter of the same mother but a different father—and she's the gorgeous, rich queen bee of her high school.

In this universe, Ayla lives in glitzy Miami instead of dreary Pittsburgh and has beaucoup bucks, courtesy of her billionaire—if usually absent—father. Her friends hit the clubs, party backstage at concerts, and take risks that are exhilarating . . . and illegal. Here she's got a date to lose her V-card with the hottest guy she's ever seen.

But on the inside, Ayla is still Annie.

So when she's offered the chance to leave the dream life and head home to Pittsburgh, will she take it?

The choice isn't as simple as you think.

Annie Nutter is unpopular, she doesn´t wear designer clothes, she isn´t from a wealthy family, she has only one best friend and both belong to the invisibles at school. Annie's father is an inventor whose inventions have not been successful, her mother sells houses and she has a younger brother that she can´t stand.

One day, Annie has a bad day at school and is humiliated by the boy she likes, and later she found her mother crying reading a magazine, in this magazine there is an article about her mother´s ex-boyfriend, he´s now a millionaire and is doing pretty well. After this event Annie begins to fantasize, that would have happened if her mother had married someone else and is in the midst of her fantasy when she had an accident with one of her father´s experiments, and she´s transported to a parallel universe where her fantasy is true and now she´s Ayla a rich, beautiful and popular girl.

I really liked Don´t You Wish! Yes, it has many cliches and stereotypes at the beginning of the book about the populars and the invisibles. The first 100 pages of the book is about Ayla living the life she always dreamed of, being the popular girl, the beautiful and very rich, with a super hot boyfriend and popular bestfriends. For that could be a little shallow at first, but after a while Ayla (Annie) changes her perspective of life and realize that underneath all the glamor she is still Annie.

Annie meets Charlie a nerd who studies quantum mechanics, and can help her to return to her universe, but in the process of spending time together, feelings begin to arise between them, so that Annie is not quite sure if she wants to return home. I loved Charlie! he´s a cute boy, he falls for Annie, not Ayla.

What I liked most about this book, apart from parallel universe and quantum mechanics, etc.... is that it takes issue of what would have happened if you had done something different ...... Don´t You Wish touches on the subject, about what would have happened if Annie's mother had married her ex-boyfriend instead of her father and consequently Annie would be different and instead of having a younger brother she has an older brother.

I do recommend this book. Don´t You Wish has a very cute, sweet and believable romance and I loved the end, it was perfect.

The Hunter and The Hunted by Kelley Armstrong

Title: The Hunter and The Hunted (Otherworld Stories #7.3, 12.5)
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Publisher: Dutton Adult
Release date: June 12th 2012

Rating: 4 / 5

But it at: Amazon | B&N

In Off-Duty Angel , dark witch and half-demon Eve Levine is desperate for a little entertainment while her lover, Kristof Nast, is detained in afterlife court—enough to volunteer an extra week’s worth of angel corps duty just to pass the time. Luckily something even better comes up: a real celestial bounty-hunter mission to trail a shaman, someone who might prove to be a useful lead in Kristof’s court case. Following the target goes smoothly, until he leads Eve to the British Museum, where she inadvertently steps into a secret dimensional passage and stumbles upon a far more enticing puzzle . . . and a much greater danger.

This collection also includes Stalked (Otherworld #7.3), previously printed in My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon.
It’s not a good sign when Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers resort to everyday activities on their long-awaited honeymoon in St. Louis. But their encroaching boredom is about to take a backseat to an unexpected threat that catches Clay’s attention. A non-pack werewolf is clearly stalking them—out to claim Elena for himself—and Clay has no intention of letting the upstart mutt spoil their romantic getaway, even if that means deceiving Elena as he pursues the rival werewolf on his own.
Normally I don't review short stories, but I was checking Netgalley one day and I found the eGalley of The Hunter and The Hunted by Kelley Armstrong; I just request it without even reading the description (I am a  fan of Kelley Armstrong's work = D). Then I noticed that there were 2 short stories, one of the stories - Stalked had already been published before, but I haven´t read it.

Stalked is about Elena and Clayton (my favorite couple in the series Women of the Otherworld), finally after 18 years they have their long awaited honeymoon and specially prepared by Clayton. Stalked is a short story (very short only 20 pages) and is told from the point of view of Clayton. I like Stalked, I love this couple and my only problem is that it was too short.

The second short story is Off-Duty Angel, this is story of Eve and Kristof. She is bored because Kristof is working and she´s on "vacation" from her job as an angel. In this short story we see Eve interact with her lover Kristof and her work partner the angel Trsiel. I did enjoy reading Off-Duty Angel because I loved to see those characters again.

And the big plus of this ebook are the first 6 chapters of the book Thirteen, the thirteenth and final book in the series Women of the Otherworld.

This week is Recommend A...book you thought was funny

Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst
Add it on Goodreads

Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.

Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.

The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
Drink, Slay, Love is one of the funniest books I've read so far. I loved it!

Read an excerpt here

The year is 2009.  Nineteen-year-old Jackson Meyer is a normal guy… he’s in college, has a girlfriend… and he can travel back through time. But it’s not like the movies – nothing changes in the present after his jumps, there’s no space-time continuum issues or broken flux capacitors – it’s just harmless fun.

That is… until the day strangers burst in on Jackson and his girlfriend, Holly, and during a struggle with Jackson, Holly is fatally shot. In his panic, Jackson jumps back two years to 2007, but this is not like his previous time jumps. Now he’s stuck in 2007 and can’t get back to the future.

Desperate to somehow return to 2009 to save Holly but unable to return to his rightful year, Jackson settles into 2007 and learns what he can about his abilities.

But it’s not long before the people who shot Holly in 2009 come looking for Jackson in the past, and these “Enemies of Time” will stop at nothing to recruit this powerful young time-traveler.  Recruit… or kill him.

Piecing together the clues about his father, the Enemies of Time, and himself, Jackson must decide how far he’s willing to go to save Holly… and possibly the entire world.
I was eager to read Tempest since last year, so I sign up on the tour at LBT, and at last I could read it, I didn´t like it as much as I was expecting maybe because I started reading Tempest with high expectations, I'm not saying I did not like, I do like it. It just not covered my expectations, I was debating on the rating between 3.5 - 4 and in the end stayed at 4.

As the synopsis is more than informative, I will focus on the characters. Jackson is a 19 years-old, he comes from a wealthy family and he discovers that he can jump in time and with the help of his friend Adam (a genius) begin to experiment with his skills and write a diary about it. And so far Jackson has only been able to jump a couple of days in the past and not in the future. Holly is Jackson girlfriend they had been dating for a few months and she´s shot to death during a struggle between Jackson and a stranger. After the shots Jackson jumps into the past and is trapped in it.

My favorite character of the book is Jackson´s twin sister Courtney who died years ago, but once Jackson is trapped in 2007, he can not jump to the future but he can jump to the past, so we get to know Courtney and she´s an adorable little girl . Others important characters in the story are Adam, Jackson's best friend and confidant of his secrets and Jackson's father, who also has an important role in history.

Tempest is the first book I read about time travel, so it was a bit confusing at first, to be able to jump back in time and change something that has no impact on the future, with Tempest I had to forget all the stereotypes about time travel to understand the story. Tempest is a book that you have to pay close attention to details, they may not be relevant at that time but then they will be at the end.

In conclusion, I liked this Tempest and I want read the second book in the series - Vortex and see what will happen with Jackson.

One Moment by Kristina McBride

Author: Kristina McBride

Release date: June 26th 2012

Rating: 4 / 5

This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie’s life. Now it’s the one she’d do anything to forget.

Maggie Reynolds remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party the night before. She remembers climbing the trail hand in hand with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can’t she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below—dead?

As Maggie’s memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding?
The story begins with Maggie, her boyfriend Joey and their best friends of a lifetime, Adam, Pete, Shannon and Tanna, having fun and hanging out in the canyon, when Shannon challenges Maggie to jump from the cliff, Maggie accepts it and with the help of her boyfriend Joey, she climbs the cliff and prepare for the jump and the next thing she knows, she is curled up on the cliff and Adam is asking her questions and Joey is not with her, he´s dead and she can´t remember what happened.

Joey´s death puts her world upside down, because Maggie was deeply in love of her boyfriend of almost two years and the worst is that she can not remember what happened when they were alone, just before his death.

Maggie is a 17 year-old girl who suffers a terrible loss, and the worst is that she can´t remember what happened, but gradually her memories start to return but not everything. Also during this time she finds out that Joey was keeping secrets from her and she tries to find out about them but in the end she will no longer be the same. I must say that Maggie's suffering had me with a knot in the stomach and about to cry at various times. The book is told from the point of view of Maggie, and has many flashbacks of Joey and Maggie.

I will comment briefly about the group, Joey, Adam, Pete, Maggie, Tanna and Shannon have been friends since kindergarten and they´re always together everywhere, the´re very close and the´re like brothers and sisters with the exception of Joey and Maggie. Joey is crazy of the group, always risking and doing crazy stunts, Adam is the reliable friend, they can always trust and count on him and Pete is the musician of the group. Maggie is a good friend and loves each one of her friends, Tanna is also very good friend and someone everyone can count on and Shannon is also the wild, making sarcastic comments and annoying her friends.

One Moment is a very moving contemporary novel, heartbreaking, with much suspense and many secrets. I recommend this book for those who like emotive contemp books, I personally like books that make me teary and this is one of them.

The Glimpse by Claire Merle

Title: The Glimpse
Author: Claire Merle
Publisher: Faber & Faber (UK)
Release date: June 7th 2012

Rating: 3.5 / 5

Buy it at : Amazon | BookDepository

In a near future, society is segregated according to whether people are genetically disposed to mental illness. 17-year-old Ana has been living the privileged life of a Pure due to an error in her DNA test. When the authorities find out, she faces banishment from her safe Community, a fate only thwarted by the fact that she has already been promised to Pure-boy Jasper Taurell.

Jasper is from a rich and influential family and despite Ana’s condition, wants to be with her. The authorities grant Ana a tentative reprieve. If she is joined to Jasper before her 18th birthday, she may stay in the Community until her illness manifests. But if Jasper changes his mind, she will be cast out among the Crazies. As Ana’s joining ceremony and her birthday loom closer, she dares to hope she will be saved from the horror of the City and live a ‘normal’ life. But then Jasper disappears.

Led to believe Jasper has been taken by a strange sect the authorities will not interfere with, Ana sneaks out of her well-guarded Community to find him herself. Her search takes her through the underbelly of society, and as she delves deeper into the mystery of Jasper’s abduction she uncovers some devastating truths that destroy everything she has grown up to believe.
There was a worldwide economic collapse in 2018, the countries closed their borders and there was a great depression, so many people lost their homes, their jobs. there were several Petrol wars and in the the petrol dry up, because of these events there were a great number of suicides. Now in London 2041, the privileged live within gated communities where only "pure" people can live. The "pures" are separating from the "crazies" by a test that diagnostic who is carrier of the Big3 - schizophrenia, depression and anxiety, if the test is positive to Big3 the person is not allowed to live within the community and is cast out to live with the "crazies" in the city.

Ana has lived most of her life within the community and has been educated as a "pure" and has lived a good life and at 15 year-old she´s promise to Jasper and is in that time that she is told that her test was wrong and she´s a carrier of Big3 and she can no longer live within the community, but she is saved by her fiance because he wants to get marry her. So she gets an extension, she must get married before she turns 18 year-old or she will be expelled from the community. The story fast forward to Ana now 17 years and eleven months and is about to get married when her fiance is abducted. So Ana decides to leave her safe world to go and find Jasper before she turns 18 years-old.

The Glimpse is a dystopian novel, which is one of my favorites genres. Ana is a girls that since she was diagnosed with Big3, has live a lie, always having to suppress her emotions, trying to be perfect, trying to fit and not stand out much because even the slightest shown of emotion could had her classify as  "crazy", so she do everything she could to not be expelled from the community, which can be stressful. But the kidnapping of Jasper changes all that and once she´s out in the city she can be herself for the first time since she was diagnosed. And in the city she meet Cole and is love at first sight.

In short I liked this book, the plot is a bit slow but realistic, sad, exciting and stressful, there was a part in the book where we get to see the inside of a mental institution,  I was really distraught over the way mental patients were treated.

If I Die by Rachel Vincent

Title: If I Die (Souls Screamer #5)
Author: Rachel Vincent
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release date:  September 27th 2011

Rating: 5/5

But it at: Amazon | B&N | BookDepository
The entire school's talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee's no ordinary high-school junior. She's a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it's a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee's going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend's needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren't quite human, either.

But Kaylee's borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

If I Die takes place six weeks after the events of My Soul to Steal, Kaylee is dating Nash and all seems to be going well, then she finds out that she is on the reapers list and she may die in less that a week; that is the main plot of this book, there is a subplot but I´m not going to go into details because this book is about Kaylee and how she handles the news about her possible death and honestly she handles herself very well.

Kaylee throughout the series have followed all the rules, is responsible, as long as it doesn´t endanger the life of someone else and if that´s the case, she´ll disobey him, hiding things to save or help anyone in need. Also she almost never loses patience and tries to get along with everyone (the only exception of this is Sabine). But in If I Die Kaylee we see a slightly different, which I feel is obvious with the news that she could die. She is distracted by a new case and feels that if she isn´t distracted, she could not keep her composure and may collapse, so keeps busy. Another character that I really liked in this book is Kaylee's father obviously he´ll try everything humanly and non-humanly necessary to save her.

I´m glad I decided to participate in the Soul Screamers Reading Challenge, this is a really good series.

If I Die is my favorite book of the series, is an emotional ride; shocking, heartbreaking, with unexpected surprises, this book made me laugh and cry; I LOVE it so much! and now I´m team Tod! (I still love Nash though). Can´t wait to read Before I Wake.

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.
My Soul to Steal takes place 2 weeks after the events of My Soul to Keep, Kaylee and Nash are no longer dating but they´re trying to overcome it and see if they can be together again. Kayle loves him and misses him very much but is not sure if she could trust him and if she could forget what happened. Meanwhile Nash want to return with her but knows that it is not so easy and he´s fighting every day with his addiction and the guilt. And in this situation arrives Sabine in to their lives, she´s Nash ex girlfriend who moved to town determined to recover him at all cost.

The arrival of Sabine shakes Kaylee a little because she´s not ready to forgive and forget what happen with Nash but she´s aware that if she doesn´t make a decision soon she could lose him. Nash accepts Sabine into his life because he´s in a time when he needs a friend, someone to listen him, someone that give him support and acceptance. And that someone is Sabine.

Outside of the love triangle, we have Emma, Kayle´s best friend, we also get to know a little more about Alec, the "young man" that Kaylee rescue from the Netherworld. And finally we get a little more of Nash´s brother Tod.

I loved My Soul to Steal! I love this series and can´t wait to read If I Die.
