The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Shadows is the prequel to Obsidian (you can read my review here), and when I decided to start reading this series, I was undecided of whether to start with Shadows or Obsidian and although it would have been more logical to start with the prequel, I decided to read first Obsidian, because in that order they were published.

Shadows is a short story of 180 pages (according to Goodreads, since I bought the ebook) that tells the story of Dawson Black, he is an alien or Luxen and he´s the twin or triplet of Daemon the main male character in the Lux series. And because I had read Obsidian before reading this book, I already knew how this story would end, but I was not emotionally prepared for that ending ..... I cried and cried .... it was a very sad ending, but the story is really beautiful.

Shadows takes place one or two years before Obsidian and the main characters are Dawson Black and Bethany Williams, they´re sixteen years old and Dawson falls in love at first sight with her and although all the Luxens are against Dawson´s relationship with a human girl, he decides to be with her and ignores all the warnings and they have a very sad ending. The romance is super sweet, cute and definitely of the Black brothers, my favorite so far is Dawson. Ohh! and Dee is hilarious in this story and I really liked the dynamic between Black triplets.

The book is told from the points of view of Dawson, Bethany and Daemon, which I loved because now I understand Daemon to some extent, the why of his negative feelings and resentment towards humans. I really liked this book.

Favorite quote:
"What?" he demanded.
"Did you just....clean a dish?" Dee backed away slowly, blinking. She glanced at Daemon. "The world is going to end. And I´m still a vir-"
"No!" both the brothers yelled in unison
Daemon looked like he was actually going to vomit. "Jesus, don´t ever finish that statement. Actually, don´t ever change that. Thank you."

  2. I used to be crazy about Daemon but after reading Shadows I didn't pick up Onyx and Opal for some reason. I just lost the interest.

  10. I really enjoy this book ! I read it after Obsidian and the story of Dawson is really lovely even though it didn't end well in this book :( But it explains a lot of thing in the Lux series, so it's a must read :D

  12. I think after reading this short story, I was able to understand why Daemon acted like a jerk when he first met Katy. Dawson is so, so nice and he definitely deserves happiness. Now I'm wondering what will happen next.. :) Great review, by the way.

  17. I don't usually read novellas, but I think I should probably start. I have heard really good things about some of them. That they add another element to certain stories, and better understanding of the characters. I think it is time to better understand!
