Budding illusionist Anna Van Housen is on top of the world: after scoring a spot on a prestigious European vaudeville tour, she has moved to London to chase her dream and to join an underground society for people like her with psychic abilities. Along with her handsome beau, Cole Archer, Anna is prepared to take the city by storm.

But when Anna arrives in London, she finds the group in turmoil. Sensitives are disappearing and, without a suspect, the group’s members are turning on one another. Could the kidnapper be someone within the society itself—or has the nefarious Dr. Boyle followed them to London?
As Cole and Anna begin to unravel the case and secrets about the society are revealed, they find themselves at odds, their plans for romance in London having vanished. Her life in danger and her relationship fizzling, can Anna find a way to track down the killer before he makes her his next victim—or will she have to pay the ultimate price for her powers?

Set in Jazz-Age London, this alluring sequel to Born of Illusion comes alive with sparkling romance, deadly intrigue, and daring magic.

I really liked Born of Illusion, the first book in this trilogy (I think it's a trilogy), is a great book with a captivating story full of mystery and a very attractive scenario (1920´s New York), but Born of Deception unfortunately didn´t met all my high expectations I had about this book, I feel that something was missing, but I still enjoyed it.

In Born of Deception, Anna travels to London to meet with the group of artists with whom she will join to go on tour through Europe where she´ll perform her number of magic and illusionism, once there she meets with her boyfriend Cole which introduces her to the secret society that is studying the "sensitives" (that´s the name for the people with special powers, like Anna that has visions of the future) but this society is nothing like she was expecting because they´re going through a restructuration and both sensitives and scientists have several disagreements, and also someone is attacking or trying to hijack the sensitives, that´s why Anna doesn´t know who to trust because she could be in danger. To add to Anna´s problems, her relationship with her boyfriend Cole, is not going as well as she was expecting, it seems they can not recover the spark they had in New York, which makes Anna to question their relationship.

Overall, I liked Born of Deception but I didn´t love it, because I liked the setting which is London in the 1920's, and all the intrigue, magic, illusions and special powers or gifts of sensitives but I felt that this time the plot was very predictable, so it remove the element of surprise to whom was the villain of the story, I really didn´t see why it was needed a love triangle and the development was a little slow at times, I felt that the story was dragging, but I´ll definitely read the next book in the trilogy, to know what will happen to Anna.

  2. It is so disappointing when the second book is a little bit if a letdown. Especially when the first was so great. Sigh. Hopefully it is a trilogy and the final book blows everyone away

  3. I haven't read the first book yet, though I'ts sitting on my shelf for a while now. Seems like this one suffers from the usual second-book-in-a-trilogy syndrome.... The only good thing I see is the setting in the book-sounds really intriguing. I think I'll get the whole trilogy before starting on the series. Great review.

  4. I've read the first one back in May and was very excited to read the second book upon its release, but I've seen plenty of not so positive reviews on GR so that made me delay buying the book. To read another review (yours) which claims being disappointed of the sequel, I now wonder if I should drop this book since my TBR shelf is endless anyway. lol

  5. I have to admit this book is lovely and the premise is great, but I had trouble with book one. I guess I will follow the reviews and benefit from the best and not so best it has to share :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

  6. I like your review on this book, I think I would like to read about the ambiance of the era as well. I guess its not such a bad review of the book, especially if you want to read the third still.
