The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.
Shadows is the prequel to Obsidian (you can read my review here), and when I decided to start reading this series, I was undecided of whether to start with Shadows or Obsidian and although it would have been more logical to start with the prequel, I decided to read first Obsidian, because in that order they were published.
Shadows is a short story of 180 pages (according to Goodreads, since I bought the ebook) that tells the story of Dawson Black, he is an alien or Luxen and he´s the twin or triplet of Daemon the main male character in the Lux series. And because I had read Obsidian before reading this book, I already knew how this story would end, but I was not emotionally prepared for that ending ..... I cried and cried .... it was a very sad ending, but the story is really beautiful.
Shadows takes place one or two years before Obsidian and the main characters are Dawson Black and Bethany Williams, they´re sixteen years old and Dawson falls in love at first sight with her and although all the Luxens are against Dawson´s relationship with a human girl, he decides to be with her and ignores all the warnings and they have a very sad ending. The romance is super sweet, cute and definitely of the Black brothers, my favorite so far is Dawson. Ohh! and Dee is hilarious in this story and I really liked the dynamic between Black triplets.
The book is told from the points of view of Dawson, Bethany and Daemon, which I loved because now I understand Daemon to some extent, the why of his negative feelings and resentment towards humans. I really liked this book.
Favorite quote:
"What?" he demanded.
"Did you just....clean a dish?" Dee backed away slowly, blinking. She glanced at Daemon. "The world is going to end. And I´m still a vir-"
"No!" both the brothers yelled in unison
Daemon looked like he was actually going to vomit. "Jesus, don´t ever finish that statement. Actually, don´t ever change that. Thank you."
Loved this short story, and I definitely agree with you on the whole understanding Daemon better!
ReplyDeleteFantastic review.
I used to be crazy about Daemon but after reading Shadows I didn't pick up Onyx and Opal for some reason. I just lost the interest.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read this series! Of course, this one is on my wishlist:)
ReplyDeleteLove this series and bought this with Obsidian and Onyx just haven't read it yet. I will have to do so soon. Sounds like you get more info about Dawson which might be good to know for Opal. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI usually don't read novellas but with the reviews that this author gets for EVERY book that she writes, I think I will make an exception for her! Thanks for the great review!
ReplyDeleteI finished Opal like 2 days ago and it was AMAZING but I REALLY want to read about Dawson :D
ReplyDeleteJust ordered this one and can't wait to read it and Opal
ReplyDeleteI hear so much love for this series. I must really pick up the first book now.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this one yet, but since I have Opal I think I had better read this one first. Glad its a good one!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy this book ! I read it after Obsidian and the story of Dawson is really lovely even though it didn't end well in this book :( But it explains a lot of thing in the Lux series, so it's a must read :D
ReplyDeleteI just read Obsidian and wanted to know what happened with Dawson and Bethany so I think I'll read this before I read the next book.
ReplyDeleteI think after reading this short story, I was able to understand why Daemon acted like a jerk when he first met Katy. Dawson is so, so nice and he definitely deserves happiness. Now I'm wondering what will happen next.. :) Great review, by the way.

ReplyDeleteI love a good prequel, I haven't read Obsidian yet, so perhaps I'll start here instead :) Great mini review!
ReplyDeleteI haven't started this series, yet. I think I'll start with the prequel. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteLove this series, I wish I had started with this prequel, especially since it sounds really good. I'm glad Dawson's story got told :)
ReplyDeleteI don't usually read novellas, but I think I should probably start. I have heard really good things about some of them. That they add another element to certain stories, and better understanding of the characters. I think it is time to better understand!
