Waiting On Wednesday (154): The Girl on the Train

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The book I´m waiting this week is

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Release date: January 13th 2015
A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone Girl, The Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by readers across markets and categories.

  3. I'm waiting on a 2014 book, THE CHILDREN ACT by Ian McEwan.

But I want to comment on the book you are anxiously awaiting. I read THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN as an ARC that I won from the publisher and librarything.com before Christmas. In my opinion, it is being seriously overhyped. While it isn't bad, you're bound to be disappointed.

Riverhead, the publisher, is doing a great marketing job for this book, right down to its very clever cover (if the cover of the finished copy is the same as the cover of the ARC). But be warned: while it will keep your attention, it probably won't be as unputdownable as claimed until the last couple of chapters. It wasn't for me.

The girl on the train is Rachel. She's a raging alcoholic who has opinions about people that are often based on nothing and are always wrong. The entire book is about her alcoholic blackouts and figuring out what really happened. I found that silly, not thrilling as this story is purported to be.

Plus some things about this book are aggravating. For instance, during tense moments, characters, especially Rachel, bite their lips, often so hard they draw blood. I could just imagine all the people walking around with bloody mouths they had chewed. Again, silly.

The biggest aggravation is difficult to describe without saying too much and spoiling the story. It has to do with how one person explains everything in the end. That is a too-convenient resolution and cheapens the authorship.

Yet, even considering these and other faults, the book still rates four out of five stars, a very good rating, just not an I-loved-it rating. That is simply because it kept my attention more than books I've rated three.

    1. The blurb doesn´t say much about Rachel, but thank for the heads up because I usually got disappointed with overhyped books.
      thanks!
